Energy conversion engineering has been one of the central themes in the development of the engineering profession. It is concerned with the transformation of energy from sources such as fossil and nuclear fuels and the sun into conveniently usable forms such as electrical energy, rotational and propulsive energy, and heating and cooling. A multitude of choices and challenges face the modern energy conversion engineer. A few years ago major segments of the energy conversion industry were settled into a pattern of slow innovation. Now, However, energy conversion is seeing very significant scholarship. because of the oil embargo of the 1970s, high fuel prices, and threatened shortages. Also, the public and country legislatures have begun to recognize that air pollution produced by factories, power plants, and automobiles, and other forms of environmental pollution are harmful. Moreover, the limitations of the Earth’s resources and of the environment are coming into clearer focus. These and other factors have been helping to create a more favorable climate for consideration, if not total acceptance, of energy conversion alternatives and new concepts. So, more open attitudes have become established. New as well as previously shelved ideas are now being considered or reconsidered, tested, and sometimes implemented. We are living in a rapidly changing world that requires continuing adaptation of old technologies and the development of new ones. Energy conversion engineering is a more stimulating, complex, and viable field today because of this altered climate.

Major Info

The major of Advanced Nuclear System Engineering (ANSE) deals with the most advanced nuclear technologies that have greater safety and economics as well as non-proliferation of nuclear materials, and the reduction of nuclear wastes. Most of the advanced nuclear technologies are based on the design and operation experiences of nuclear reactors, newly developed and/or technologies being developing currently of advanced nuclear reactors. The ANSE program includes active technical training and education on the fundamental and application areas of nuclear system engineering while minimizing simple academic educations. The graduate program intends to provide the advanced technical skills and research capabilities. The graduate program (Master and Ph.D. courses) of the ANSE major consists mainly of three groups such as Nuclear Reactor Engineering (RE), Nuclear Safety (NS), and Fusion Technologies (FT). The RE group deals mainly with design and performance evaluation of new reactor systems such as research reactor, advanced light water reactor, Gen-IV reactors. The NS group covers fundamental thermal-hydraulic experiments, safety analysis, thermal-hydraulic design, severe accidents, probabilistic safety assessment, environmental safety, radiation safety, and nuclear regulation. And the FT deals with nuclear reactor physics, nuclear materials, instrumentation and control, and radiation shielding. The courses consist of classroom lecture, field research, seminars, and thesis research. The students participate very closely with faculty members in research projects conducted by the campus of Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI). Through systematic and comprehensive programs of education and research, we aim to contributing to the development of more safe and sustainable advanced nuclear systems.

Research and education are performed based on thermo-fluid mechanics for process design, safety, and reliability. Students work with Major equipment within energy plants that are used in energy production, transformation, and usage. The study of basic mechanics such as thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, heat transfer, and solid mechanics in the undergraduate school is the prerequisite curriculum. In energy plant engineering, the advanced curriculum for the above courses will be provided. For the study of plant engineering, plant process design, plant reliability, advanced fluid and turbo machinery, and plant fire and explosion principles are provided as the necessary curriculum. The trend of mass consumption of resources has been accelerated by industrial development and improvements in the standard of living. This mass consumption raises serious global problems such as the fast depletion of resources and the rapid increase of wastes generated. These problems can be solved using recycling technologies to conserve the global environment and, at the same time, to secure a stable supply of resources necessary for our industries. In particular, the development of resources using recycling technologies, and the training of professional manpower in this field, are of great importance on the ground due to our limited land space and dwindling mineral resources. This course of study aims at inculcating professional knowledge about the recycling of the variety of resources generated in the course of economic, social, and cultural development. The can be categorized into this course consist of two major parts: (1) introduction of basic resources recycling technology, including chemistry of environmental resources, environmental thermodynamics, and analytical chemistry of resources and (2) in-depth study of metals recovery, the making raw of materials from inorganic and organic wastes, recycling process technology, and treatment of hazardous military wastes. Also, in order to foster a practical access to the subject matter, an on-site research lab course will be offered to allow students to participate in an on-going project and receive knowledge on various recycling technologies.

Korea is the 6th largest annual petroleum consumer worldwise and is 4th in oil imports. The petroleum demand in Korea will continuously increase in the future. the securing of a petroleum reserve is vital to the Korean economy. To secure enough reserves to meet oil and gas demand in Korea, we need to obtain necessary technology for domestic and foreign petroleum exploration and exploitation. In this department, we try to inculcate in students a practical knowledge of oil and gas technology in this internationally competitive environment. The topics of the courses include all the fundamental theory spanning seismic surveying to petroleum law. We welcome well prepared domestic students as well as international students who want to become competitive experts in the upstream of the oil and gas industry.

In this major, we focus on environmentally-friendly track and transportation systems, thus conducting education and research in a variety of academic fields that can be used to address both policy and technology alike. Our education covers the areas of the principal knowledge on transportation policy and the core parts of the railway transportation technology : track infrastructure, electric power supply, signals and communications, rolling stock, and operation, all while performing research on current issues in each field. Education on multidisciplinary technology of conversion and system engineering will enable students to learn systematic ways of thinking and new approaches. Research areas range from improvement of interface functions to analysis of functions to optimization to management of systems over the life cycle of transportation systems. Moreover, this major involves a real research project with professors and students participating to create a future transportation system to ensure adequate velocity, safety, comfort, sustainability, and low use of energy. This will lead to practical research in which education from the real field and problem-solving practices are combined. To improve our global competitiveness, we will also make sure to initiate joint research with advanced research projects organizations overseas while participating in academic seminars.

Smart City & Construction Engineering aims to cultivate urban engineering experts who converge and integrate advanced technologies and environmental technologies which are necessary for constructing the future city as a solution to the urban problems. Based on the “Cyber Physical System” which applies advanced technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT), Information and Communications Technology (ICT), and Big Data and “Eco-friendly Physical System” which improves existing infrastructure construction technologies, urban system in the future will be developed into a sustainable urban system. We aim to cultivate experts who understand the urban system by shaping detailed majors including construction environment engineering, transportation and logistics system & ITS engineering, and geotechnical & geo-space engineering for cultivating convergent and integrated type of talented people who understand the planning, design, construction and maintenance of the future city and solve the urban problems. We plan to operate a specialized education program which is designed to share Korean construction experience and potential for Koreans and foreigners. Modern societies are rapidly changing with the high technology developments in the areas of precision machines, electronics, aerospace, energy, and environmental engineering. As a basis of these developments, Advanced Materials Science and Engineering (AMSE) is a discipline intended to improve materials properties and develop new innovative materials through the enhancement and functionalization of material properties for such materials as metals, ceramics, and composites. AMSE is composed of various detailed subjects areas centered on the design, processing, and characterization of materials. More specifically, AMSE can be divided into several fields, including : (1) new metallic materials for the development of structural metals with improved properties, (2) ceramic materials for synthesizing, processing, shaping, and sintering ceramic powders (3) enhanced surface engineering of materials through the development of physical or electrochemical processes, (4) composite materials to enhance the functions and structures of materials, (5) nanopowder materials for high-strength nanomaterials, electromagnetics, and energy and biological/environmental applications, and (6) material characterization and assessment for the design and processing of materials and components. Thus, the purpose of education in AMSE lies in the educating specialists with practical abilities through microscopic and macroscopic knowledge of novel materials. Through collaboration with companies and sophisticated course work suck as practical seminars, we intend to cultivate engineers with practical experience to meet needs from the industry.

The Korea Research Institute of Ships & Ocean Engineering has been doing pioneering and challenging R&D in the field of ships and related technologies. The KRISO will continue to play a pivotal role, contributing to knowledge-based maritime industry and supporting government research polices. The field of Ship and Ocean Engineering includes a very broad band of technologies including the hydrodynamics of marine vessels, green ship technology to reduce GHGs, safety evaluation to prevent marine accidents, development of high-tech marine equipment and applied systems for ocean resources, marine information & communication, offshore structures and plants for development and utilization of marine resources and marine spaces, design and functional evaluation of offshore structures, signal processing for sonar and acoustic channel modeling, and design and implementation of underwater and maritime digital communication systems. KRISO has extensive experimental facilities, a towing tank, large and medium size cavitation tunnels, an ocean engineering basin, an ice basin, an anechoic tank, and a full mission bridge simulator, all of which can be used for education and research. Together with our research experience and world class facilities, we believe our students will become creative and qualified research scientists and engineers for industries and research institutes by linking their theory & application education and practical on-site research activities.

The specialty for Advanced Materials and Chemical Engineering at UST-KRICT consists of two research areas of advanced materials and chemical engineering to pursue cutting-edge technology. Advanced materials is an interdisciplinary specialty area that focuses on potential applications and fundamental properties of functional materials based on chemistry. Our program of teaching and research in this specialty area spans not only the breadth of chemistry including the design, synthesis and characterization but also fundamental physics, process, and simulation of the chemistry convergence materials. More specialized areas such as 1) Molecular engineering for advanced materials, 2) Information & electronics materials, and 3) Green & renewable energy materials are also covered. Chemical engineering is a multidisciplinary research area that can get a clue to solve global environmental issue by using state-of-the-art technology of CCUS (Carbon Capture Storage Utilization) for Green Industry, Greenhouse (CO2) Gas Reduction, and Bio-based Chemistry for Eco-friendly Process based on Environment Technology (ET) and Biotechnology (BT), which are necessary to restore and conserve ecosystems on earth. The program also focuses on cultivating creative research manpower who meets industry’s need via making a connection with job training.
