Korea Institute of Nuclear Safety
The Korea Institute of Nuclear Safety (KINS) is established as a regulatory expert organization that protects the public from radiation disasters arising from the production and utilization of nuclear energy and contributes to public safety and environmental conservation. KINS has contributed to establishing nuclear and radiation safety with public trust through legal, technical, systematic and administrative activities. These regulatory activities thoroughly confirm the safety of institutions and facilities where nuclear energy and radiation are utilized. KINS conducted regulatory safety reviews and inspections of nuclear power plants, research reactors, nuclear fuel cycle facilities, radioactive waste management facilities, and facilities using radiation sources. It also performs regulatory research for nuclear safety, and develops law and safety standards. In addition, KINS operates a nationwide environmental radiation monitoring network to prepare not only for radiological emergencies at home but also for nuclear/radiological emergencies and nuclear bomb tests by neighboring countries. Safety is the top priority and will not be compromised. KINS will become a credible fortress for the safe utilization of nuclear energy through the great advancement of regulatory technology, constantly communication with the general public to gain and maintain their trust.

KAERI was established in 1959 to lay the foundation for achieving national nuclear energy self-reliance. Over the past 50 years, KAERI has become the driving force behind Korea´s national economic growth. KAERI has laid stepping stones to promote strong economic development by using nuclear energy as a major energy source strengthening Korea´s industrial competitiveness through the transfer of advanced science and technology. The world is faced with a serious crisis due to climate change and energy scarcity. This crisis has escalated due to the indiscriminate use of energy. As a result, the global environment is being destroyed at a very rapid rate. Nuclear energy is an attractive alternative to avoid such an energy crisis. Nuclear energy can be a sustainable energy source for humankind for thousands of years. Unlike fossil fuels, nuclear energy does not produce any greenhouse gases which are being blamed for global warming. Nuclear energy is an energy source for the future which can supply an abundance of clean energy to humankind. KAERI is committed to developing advanced nuclear technology to supply environmentally clean energy. We are making efforts to develop nuclear technology for hydrogen production, which will place us in the advanced era of the hydrogen economy. We are also g on reactor and nuclear fuel research not only to promoti the welfare of future generations but also to improve the existing nuclear power technology. We are developing radiation fusion technology, which we believe will be the basis for high value-added industries. With these efforts, KAERI will be reborn as a leading research institute and contribute to Korea´s national development in the 21st century. We will do our utmost to become a global leader.
